22nd Street Repaving and Safety Improvements to Begin Next Week

The South of South Neighborhood Association, Philadelphia Streets Department and Office of Transportation, Infrastructure and Sustainability are pleased to announce that the long-awaited project to repave and improve safety on 22nd street will begin next week. Throughout the past two years, the SOSNA Vision Zero Committee has been working with neighbors and our partner city agencies to propose a safer future for 22nd street - one with protected bike lanes, additional crosswalks and better signage to reduce crashes along with encouraging more biking and walking. See our previous blog for details about the proposal for a safer 22nd street.

The Philadelphia Streets Department will begin roadwork on June 15th which will first involve milling the roadway surface. During this time, there will be temporary parking restrictions. Once the road is milled, the City will schedule repaving, re-striping and installation of flexible delineator posts between the bike lane and parking. Note that parking will move away from being adjacent to the curb on the left (west) side of 22nd street, as seen in the above graphic. Left side parking will be located between the diagonal striped buffer and travel lane. This is a similar configuration to what is installed on Chestnut Street in West Philadelphia, Market Street and JFK Boulevard in Center City. If you park a car on 22nd street, we recommend following closely the temporary parking restrictions until the restriping has been finished to allow the City to complete the work in a timely manner (and to avoid getting your car towed or ticketed). The city will be posting signs several days in advance of parking restrictions.

For more details on the project outside our neighborhood as well as information about the repaving process, see Philadelphia’s press release.

We thank the City and our neighbors for working closely with us to make this project happen.
