As the weather warms and the snow melts, this is the perfect time to give your block a little TLC! All the litter that was trapped under snow is now free so grab it before it blows away and into our waterways!
At SOSNA’s Clean & Green committee, we wanted to provide you with a few tips as we move into spring:
Recycling should be in a bin to prevent bags from breaking or blowing away. Recycling cannot be put in plastic bags - anything in a plastic bag will be taken to a landfill.
Pizza boxes - many of these are wax coated or have grease on them. Any wax coated or greasy pieces of boxes must be disposed of as trash, not recycling.
Electronics waste - you can take this waste to a sanitation center, or visit eForce on Grays Ferry Ave to drop off your electronics waste (anything with a plug!).
Mattresses - Philly consistently rates among the top 5 worst cities in America for bed bug contamination. For everyone’s safety, your mattress must be wrapped in plastic for removal by our sanitation workers. We all thank you!
Missed trash/recycling pick-up - we know, sometimes this happens and it stinks! If it does, please take your missed trash/recycling back inside rather than leave it on the curb for an entire week. Leaving it on the curb increases the likelihood that it will blow away or get messed with by our neighborhood squirrels (we all know they can cause some serious damage when they want that trash!).
If you want to get involved, we encourage you to consider:
Adopting a residential trash can
Host an alley clean-up with your neighbors behind your houses
Host a block clean-up
Make street tree signs for our local Tree Tender group
Participating in one of SOSNA’s neighborhood clean-ups
Don't forget about our Philly Spring Clean Up coming up on Saturday, April 10 from 9:30a-1:00p. Join us to help clean and beautify one of the main thruways in our neighborhood during this year's Philly Spring Clean Up - Christian Street!
Eastside Check-in: 18th & Christian (in front of YMCA)
Westside Check-in: Grays Ferry & Christian
*Coffee at the sign-in tables! (provided by The Social House)
Want to get involved or do you have ideas for our Clean & Green committee? We want to hear from you! Please reach out to Addie or David.
