Preservation Action Plan - Progress Update
The Graduate Hospital neighborhood is home to many unrecognized and recognized African American cultural and institutional legacies through the 19th century. In the last few decades, our neighborhood has seen a displacement of intergenerational Black families influenced by a number of political decisions, policies and systemic issues. Along with the displacement of the families and the demolition of their homes and institutions, we lose their stories, influence and culture that built the neighborhood we see today.
South of South Neighborhood Association (SOSNA) aims to preserve the historic resources that provide meaning to the neighborhood through policies, storytelling and support programs. Our Preservation Action Plan outlines some ways that we can start these conversations with our neighbors about the past, present and future.

Presentation of Doctor's Row Historic Nomination
Did you know our previous office at 1901 Christian was the Spanish Beauty College, owned by a strong duo of Black women (then later a go-to bar for nearby workers called "1901").

SOSNA Safe Pathways to Schools
This important initiative by our Vision Zero Committee aims to improve the safety of four intersections at two public elementary schools, E.M. Stanton and Chester Arthur. Specifically, it involves the creation of curb “bulb-outs”, highly visible painted pedestrian areas, and vertical delineators to protect the crosswalk areas at four key intersections.
The committee has been hard at work with our community, Mural Arts and other stakeholders to design ground murals for the intersections surrounding our local schools for safer pedestrian crossing. We’ll be providing an update and ways to get involved in this initiative at our meeting!
